Commemorating the 70th Anniversary of the Windrush through Art
The founder of the Radiate Festival Wendy Cummins talks about one of the ways in which the festival gave a home to a large new artistic creation
In 2018 Wanda Nation commissioned a large scale digital art piece to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Windrush migration. The mural was created to be displayed as a large installation at the inaugural Radiate Windrush Festival.
We felt it was important to have something visual, imposing and large scale to allow event attendees the opportunity to interact with a piece so relevant. Using digital media was the perfect way to show art in a modern, innovative and accessible way. We saw families and friends have fun and take some really wonderful selfies in front of this iconic piece of art and add themselves to a part of our Black British history.
The use of the primary colours from the various flags of the commonwealth countries certainly added to the impact and wow factor. It was a conscious effort to create a great talking point for the Windrush celebrations like never before.
It was important that the mural evoked a sense of pride, honour & placement of respect for the West Indian contribution to British History.
This mural was also displayed for 2 days at the Lambeth Country Fair in July 2018 as part of our contribution to representing the Windrush communities from Brixton and the Lambeth areas.
