Highlights

We will be releasing the full programme over the coming months but below is a taste of what we have in store...

Small Island

Your chance to see the smash hit play ★★★★★ by Andrea Levy

Orange Prize-winning novel Small Island by British born Andrea Levy comes to life in the epic theatre adaptation by Helen Edmundson. With a sold-out run in 2019 at National Theatre, this production was professionally filmed to bring the live play experience to the big screen, as part of National Theatre Live’s 10th birthday.

Small Island embarks on a journey from Jamaica to Britain, through the Second World War to 1948 – the year the HMT Empire Windrush docked at Tilbury.

The play follows three intricately connected stories. Hortense yearns for a new life away from rural Jamaica, Gilbert dreams of becoming a lawyer, and Queenie longs to escape her Lincolnshire roots. Hope and humanity meet stubborn reality as the play traces the tangled history of Jamaica and the UK.

A performance company of 40 actors took to the stage of the National Theatre in this timely and moving story to deliver this fictional yet very familiar history of many Caribbean & Windrush Generation families across the UK.

Small Island is BBFC rated 15 due to use of strong language. As part of depicting the experience of Jamaican immigrants to Britain after the Second World War, at times characters in the play use language which is racially offensive.
